WordPress vs Next.js: Which Should Your Business Choose?

An honest comparison of WordPress and Next.js for business websites — performance, cost, security, editing and SEO — and how to choose the right one.

“Should we build on WordPress or Next.js?” is one of the most common questions we get. There’s no universal winner — the right answer depends on your business. Here’s an honest breakdown.

What each one actually is

WordPress is a content management system that powers a large share of the web. You (or a marketing team) edit pages through an admin dashboard, and a theme controls how they look. It’s mature, familiar and endlessly extensible through plugins.

Next.js is a modern React framework used to build fast, custom websites and web applications. Pages are built by developers, rendered efficiently and served as highly optimised code. It’s what we use for performance-critical builds — including bespoke products like our work for Mizuho Bank.

Where WordPress wins

  • Non-technical editing. If your team needs to publish and edit content daily without a developer, WordPress’s dashboard is hard to beat.
  • Speed to launch for standard sites. Brochure sites, blogs and simple stores can go live quickly.
  • Ecosystem. There’s a plugin for almost everything, from bookings to memberships.

The trade-offs: plugins add weight and security surface, performance needs active management, and heavy sites can feel sluggish without care.

Where Next.js wins

  • Performance. Next.js sites are typically much faster, which helps conversions and SEO.
  • Security. A custom build has a far smaller attack surface than a stack of third-party plugins.
  • Custom experiences. Interactive tools, web apps, kiosks and product experiences that WordPress can’t comfortably do.
  • Scalability. It handles growth and complex, multi-region setups cleanly — the kind of architecture behind Jadco’s international presence.

The trade-offs: content editing needs a thoughtfully set-up system, and it’s a developer-led build rather than a theme you configure yourself.

Performance and SEO

All else equal, speed is a ranking and conversion factor, and Next.js has a structural advantage. But a well-maintained WordPress site can perform well, and a poorly built Next.js site can be slow. The framework sets the ceiling; execution decides where you land. Either way, the AI-search and structured-data foundations matter more to visibility than the framework badge.

Cost

WordPress often has a lower upfront cost but ongoing plugin, hosting and maintenance costs. Next.js usually has a higher build investment but lower running costs and fewer surprises. Look at total cost of ownership over a few years, not just launch day.

How to choose

  • Choose WordPress if your team publishes content constantly, you need a standard site fast, and you rely on specific plugins.
  • Choose Next.js if performance is critical, you want a custom or interactive experience, security matters, or you’re building a product or web app.

Plenty of businesses run both — a fast Next.js marketing site with a separate content system behind it. There’s no wrong answer, only the right fit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Next.js better than WordPress?

Neither is universally better. Next.js excels at performance, security and custom or interactive experiences. WordPress excels at fast, non-technical content editing and standard sites. The right choice depends on your team, budget and goals.

Is Next.js better for SEO?

Next.js has a structural performance advantage that helps SEO, but a well-built WordPress site can also rank well. Site speed, content quality and structured data matter more than the framework name.

Can you move a site from WordPress to Next.js?

Yes. Migrating from WordPress to Next.js is common when a business outgrows its site or needs better performance. We plan migrations to preserve SEO and content while upgrading speed and security.
